This program is designed for advanced high school students and early college students who are interested in medicine, healthcare, or exploring a pre-med path. No prior medical experience is required.

Students will:

• Learn foundational medical concepts usually reserved for medical school

• Work through real clinical-style cases

• Develop clinical reasoning skills

• Complete medical projects via our project hub

• Have the opportunity to publish work in the medical writing space

Docera students complete scholarly medical communication projects such as medical articles, educational infographics, literature reviews, and clinical presentations. These projects are designed to help students engage more deeply with medicine while developing skills in scientific communication, critical thinking, and research interpretation.

For example, after learning about sickle cell disease in our hematology module, a student may choose to explore emerging genetic therapies for sickle cell disease by reviewing current medical literature on PubMed. Using guidance from their physician mentor, the student would synthesize this information into a polished medical article or presentation designed for broader audiences.

Outstanding projects may also be eligible for submission to partner medical blogs, online publications, or presentation opportunities through the Docera Future Physician Conference.

No—the publications students contribute to are not peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Instead, students work on medical writing and communication projects that are published in online medical magazines and educational platforms. These pieces are typically written for a general, non-specialist audience and focus on clearly explaining medical topics rather than producing original scientific research.

Importantly, students are not conducting primary research or running experiments. Instead, they learn how to:

• Read and interpret medical literature (such as PubMed articles)

• Synthesize existing research

• Work with a physician mentor to develop accurate, structured medical writing

• Translate complex medical concepts into clear, accessible language

This type of work reflects a very real and often underappreciated skill in medicine: the ability to communicate medical knowledge effectively.

Strong physicians must be able to:

• Explain complex diagnoses and treatments in understandable terms to patients

• Translate rapidly evolving research into practical clinical understanding

• Educate communities and improve health literacy

• Write clearly in clinical notes, publications, and interdisciplinary settings

In that sense, this experience helps students build an early foundation in one of the most essential physician skills—medical communication and synthesis of evidence-based information—even if it does not involve traditional peer-reviewed research.

Docera's programming is designed to strengthen key skills and experiences that are important for medical school applications. With that said, no program can guarantee admission into medical school.

Docera helps you build a strong foundation in areas that admissions committees value, including:

• Exposure to medicine through physician-led teaching and clinical case discussions

• Medical communication skills, especially through writing and presenting complex topics clearly

• Evidence-based thinking, by learning how to read and synthesize medical literature

• Meaningful extracurricular experience that demonstrates sustained interest in healthcare

• Physician mentorship and insight into the medical field, which can help students make more informed career decisions and write stronger personal statements

For students who are already interested in medicine, this program can help them better understand the field and more clearly articulate their motivation for pursuing it.

However, medical school admissions are based on a wide range of factors, including academic performance, clinical exposure, leadership, and long-term commitment to service and healthcare. This program is best viewed as one valuable component of a larger academic and extracurricular profile, not a standalone path to admission.

Students in Docera receive physician mentorship, editorial feedback, and guidance throughout the project development process. However, publication and conference presentation opportunities are not guaranteed and are based on the quality, originality, professionalism, and completion of each student’s work.
