Shadowing is an important part of exploring a career in medicine and is expected by most medical schools. However, shadowing is ultimately a passive experience. Students observe physicians caring for patients but rarely have the opportunity to deeply engage with disease, clinical reasoning, medical ethics, or the science behind medical decision-making.
In this webinar, Dr. Mallory Kane, an Internal Medicine resident physician, will discuss the limitations of shadowing, common misconceptions about pre-med preparation, and practical ways students can begin engaging more meaningfully with medicine before medical school.
Topics will include:
Why shadowing is valuable—and where it falls short
Common misconceptions about pre-med preparation
The gap between pre-med education and medical education
Ways students can begin learning medicine before medical school
Opportunities to engage with disease, clinical reasoning, and medical ethics
Scholarly projects and other meaningful medical experiences
The webinar will conclude with a live Q&A session where students and parents will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Kane questions about medicine, medical school preparation, and building meaningful experiences before applying.
